WOW – Christmas is just around the corner, again!

Like most business owners do you panic about how to handle your business, sorting Christmas preparations, juggling school holidays and more?

Well it can feel like it is all out of control and coping is just something completely against anything you feel is manageable.

Don’t panic.  Stop, sit down and work out a plan.  Yes, it is something you can plan for and now.

So, what is the next step?

Firstly answer some questions…

  • Where is Christmas being held this year?  At your house, at a relatives close by, interstate or overseas?
  • Are you and your family planning to take a trip away over the holiday season?
  • Do you need to purchase gifts for family, friends, clients and/or employees?
  • Is there a way to switch off from your business for a few days?
  • Does your family say to you every year “So when are you taking time off”?

There are several more questions you can ask yourself, but let’s start with these questions above.

1. Where is Christmas being held this year?  At your house, at a relatives close by, interstate or overseas?

Depending on where you are spending Christmas can make it easier or harder to be prepared.  If you need to make your way interstate, this can take some planning especially if you need to fly and need to make bookings, ensure everything is packed etc.  But this is another story and another blog post to come.

If you host Christmas or just need to drive a short distance to a relatives home to celebrate, this can be less stressful, but still you need to ensure that the presents are wrapped, the lunch is prepared or the car is packed and presents and family ready to get in the car at a certain time.

Yes, Christmas can be and generally is a stressful time of the year.

Whichever of the above relates to you – create a checklist and cross items off as completed, that way you will not forget anything and it can relief stress.

2. Are you and your family planning to take a trip away over the holiday season?

This is often the last thing that a business owner, in particular, thinks about.  It is quite easy to ensure you book yourself into a seminar or a workshop, even if interstate.  But what about the all important family holiday?  Surely that is more important?

So, work out as a family where you would all like to go.  Work out a budget to accommodate for everything, not just getting to and from the destination but a budget to do lots of things once there.  Ensure everyone involved is happy and then proceed to finding an agent to assist you with your exciting upcoming travel.

If you are a business owner, this can also be daunting – don’t feel like your business will suffer whilst you are away.  Put a plan of attack in place.  Let your clients or customers know that you are a taking a week off.  Create an email auto-responder to let people know that you are away but you can be contacted via your email or phone but with a slight delay.  Outsource your email management and phone answering in your absence so that every lifeline into your business remains constant.  This can be a blog post all of its own, so stay tuned.

3. Do you need to purchase gifts for family, friends, clients and/or employees?

Start thinking now of gifts you need to purchase.  It may seem like a long way away right now, but believe me it will creep up and then suddenly it all becomes last minute.  It does not need to be that way.   There are several ways for example to say thank you to employees and/or clients.  You can thank them with a voucher or a hamper specifically for them, perhaps a bottle of champagne with a label with their name on it.  The list goes on and on but is a must for this season.
For your family and friends.  Do you buy for everyone in your family or just the young ones?  Work out a system which works for your family.  With your friends perhaps have a Secret Santa and then get together just before Christmas and open up together celebrating the season.

This is just blog 1 of 5 in relation to the upcoming Holiday Season.  It is just around the corner, so hopefully some of these tips may just help you get through and be less stressed.

Have a great day
